Dr. Barrett is the inaugural director of the Office of Health Equity and Disparities at the Duke Cancer Institute. She is faculty in the Department of Community and Family Medicine’s Division of Community Health, and serves as the Director of the Duke CTSA Community Connections Core, Center for Community and Population Health Improvement. She is also a member of the Duke Cancer Control and Population Sciences Program. As a Medical Sociologist, Dr. Barrett’s expertise can be defined broadly within the context of developing
effective community and health system partnerships and collaborations to improve health outcomes, utilizing community and health system assessments to inform strategic priority setting, and program development, implementation and evaluation. Dr. Barrett has received several awards and honors including the American Sociology Association’s Minority Fellowship Doctoral Award, NIH Postdoctoral Fellowship in Health Services Research at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, the MLK Southern Christian Leadership Conference Drum Major for Justice Award, and several awards and recognitions for her community engagement activities in health.
